York, February 2020:
Only 8 weeks before England's first, national lockdown York was victim to flooding, as a result of storms Dennis, Ciara and Jorge- all of which hit the country hard. I stayed in the flooded areas for two days at the peak of the crisis, witnessing the horrendous affects this had on the local community. |
Out of all my images, my favourite is definitely this, which shows the severity of the catastrophe. Upon first glance, we notice the unusual amount of water being drained out a home, only to be thrown back out side, where it will most likely only go back in side or cause havoc for the neighbours. Next, our eyes are drawn to the large, almost fallen, 'FOR SALE' sign as we almost wince- understanding despite the lovely area, their chances are now low of being able to sell their property. We wonder if they had noticed their might be a bad flood and decided to sell- though not a reliable possibility considering the obvious lack of flood-proof preparation. |
I like this image as it shows how bad the floods were and how damaging they would have been for many people. The other side of the grassy top to the right of the trees is actually a mossy wall, separating the area you can walk to a few metres below and across from the road from the actual road. As we look further down the lane, it becomes clear the water did not intend to stop, causing the usually quiet busy road (for that type of place) to become impassable. |
This photograph is one of my preferred because of the DOF which allows the snowy hills to stand out against the darker post, also covered in snow. The grass breaking its way through the weather could represent new life growing through harsh conditions, or symbolise old life growing weak against rough conditions- and the post could possibly illustrate someone watching on as they do the same, or the opposite. Looking beyond the hills and snow, we notice the distinct outline of trees, branches and twigs bare from the wind and change of season. They stand tall against the frost, yet to be contaminated. |
